Lateral/Certified Police Officers

Lateral/Certified Police Officers with at least one year of police patrol experience (responding to calls for service) will be hired at the rank of Police Officer II with a starting salary of $63,169.00.

Lateral/Certified Police Officers with no police patrol experience will be hired at the starting salary of $59,583.00.

Eligibility

To be considered for employment, you must be able to meet the following standards:

  • U.S. Citizen
  • Excellent health
  • Weight proportionate to height
  • Age 21 or older at the time of your graduation from the academy
  • You must have a high school diploma or a GED equivalent (higher degree preferred)
  • Possess or can acquire a valid Maryland driver's license


Restrictions

Applicants cannot become a police officer in the State of Maryland if they have:

  • Ever committed, been involved in or convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor.
  • Ever illegally sold, produced, cultivated, distributed, or transported a controlled dangerous substance, narcotic drug, or marijuana. Illegally used a controlled dangerous substance, narcotic drug, or marijuana for any purpose within the 3 years prior to application.
  • Illegally used a controlled dangerous substance, narcotic drug, or marijuana while employed as a law enforcement officer.
  • Ever used heroin, phencyclidine (PCP), or lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD).
  • Used any controlled dangerous substance or narcotic drug more than five times, or one time since becoming 21 years old.
  • Used marijuana more than 20 times, or five times since becoming 21 years old.

Complete the Online Application

Written Examination

After completing the online applications, applicants will be notified of a date and time for the written examination. The day of examination you will be required to bring a valid state driver's license and a second form of identification, such as a birth certificate or social security card

Walk-ins are accepted, but must show up at least one hour before examination to complete an application.

Physical Agility Test

A standard physical agility test will be administered.

Interview and Background Check

Applicants will be invited to interview with a selection panel. You must submit to a complete background check.

Screenings

Applicants will be required to undergo a medical examination, drug screening, polygraph examination and psychological screening. All screenings can be scheduled separately.

Chief’s Interview

The final step will be an interview with the Police Chief. He will evaluate performance and fit with the team.
